Adobe® Flash® Player is a lightweight browser plug-in and rich Internet application runtime that delivers consistent and engaging user experiences, stunning audio/video playback, and exciting gameplay.
Got Flash Player on your Mac? You should update it now to protect your computer from the dreaded Code Execution. Adobe has recently released security updates that you should download right away.
According to reports, there were a total of 84 vulnerabilities that have been discovered by Palo Alto Networks, Tencent, Trend Micro, and other researchers. The security vulnerabilities are present in the Adobe Flash, Reader, and other Acrobat offerings.
The company detected that the following Flash versions of OS X and macOS Sierra are vulnerable to possible code execution attacks:
- Flash Player version 23.0.0.162 and earlier
- Flash Player Extended Support Release version 18.0.0.375
- Flash Player for Google Chrome version 23.0.0.162 and earlier
This is why they are calling out to Mac users to update to the latest version of the Flash Player – version 23.0.0.185. If the built-in update mechanism is activated, the player should download and install the update automatically. Otherwise, Mac users have to visit Adobe Flash Player Download Center, and perform the update manually.
Flash Player on Google Chrome should update automatically as well. Macs running Flash Player 11.3.x or later are also advised to update.
If you are using Safari on macOS Sierra, may not have to update since Flash is deactivated by default. However, if you turn on the plug-in when prompted.
In the Adobe Security Bulletin, update released last 11 October 2016 address the following vulnerabilities:
- CVE-2016-6992
A type confusion vulnerability that could lead to code execution.
- CVE-2016-4286
A security bypass vulnerability
- CVE-2016-6981, CVE-2016-6987
These are use-after-free vulnerabilities that could lead to code execution.
- CVE-2016-4273, CVE-2016-6982
Two of the 8 memory corruption vulnerabilities that could lead to code execution. Other issues are CVE-2016-6983, CVE-2016-6984, CVE-2016-6985, CVE-2016-6986, CVE-2016-6989, and CVE-2016-6990.
The same update was also rolled out to Windows and Linux users. Whichever OS you use, you must keep Adobe Flash Player updated at all times.
